We publish guides for DIYers planning small off-grid, backup and portable solar systems, with a focus on understanding components, sizing panels, batteries and inverters, and planning small off-grid, backup and portable systems.
Who we are
Solar Power DIY was founded in 2026 and is run by a small, independent editorial team. We are an online-only publication. We are not owned by, and do not work on behalf of, any manufacturer, installer, brand or retailer, and no company reviews or approves our guides before they are published.
What we cover
Our guides are organized into these sections: DIY Solar Fundamentals, Solar System Components, DIY Solar Planning, DIY Solar Projects, Solar Tools and Calculators and Safety and Troubleshooting. Each guide explains what matters for a given situation, which trade-offs to expect and where its advice stops.
How we research
Our content is written by the Solar Power DIY editorial team. We base our guides on manufacturer specifications and installation manuals, government energy resources such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and published electrical safety guidance, and we link to the source when a guide states a figure or a safety point.
We are clear about the limits of our work. Unless an article explicitly describes our own use of a product, our guides are research-based and are not hands-on product tests. We do not invent test results, ratings or statistics. Read our Editorial Policy for details.
Safety and scope
Solar panels produce voltage whenever light reaches them, and batteries can release very high currents. Our guides explain concepts and planning; they are not installation instructions. Work on household wiring, grid connection and higher-voltage systems requires permits and a licensed electrician where local rules say so.
